Ab Fab Review

Ab Fab, or Absolutely Fabulous, came out recently and I did a review of the trailer that you can read here. I won’t lie, the trailer made me very excited for the movie as it looked incredible. A great mix of British humour and the good old girls back together again. However, actually seeing the movie, I felt it was outdated, a bit weird and not as good as I thought it would be.

The movie follows Patsy and Edina as they accidentally ‘kill’ Kate Moss and become fugitives. They run away to the south of France where hilarity ensues. When I was a child my mother used to watch Ab Fab constantly so I feel like I understand the characters and their humour but it still didn’t work for me. The joke is the women are in the fashion industry but they fail at anything they really try to do while enjoying a cocktail of drink and, surprisingly, drugs. The joke is that they are not current anymore, they try to keep up with the trends but fail as any middle aged person does. Like the characters, this movie felt much the same, trying to be current and funny and just failing.

Yes the movie did have its moments but it was just a bit too unexciting. The story didn’t seem to have enough going for it, as in it was quite simple and could’ve easily been a short film, and the ending was so abrupt but obvious it really felt anti-climactic. Some of the references to transgenders and slut-shaming was almost distasteful to me and it felt like the movie was meant for the 90s, when the show was on, and not the present day.

Of course, if you enjoyed the TV show go watch the movie but keep these things in mind and let me know what you think.

What do you think of Ab Fab?

Until next time.
