The Watch Review

The Watch is a movie that I didn’t have high hopes for. It was released in 2012 and didn’t really get any coverage so I didn’t even find out about this movie until this year. Looking at the cast, however, I had to give it a watch. Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Richard Ayoade? Yes please.

The Watch follows four men who become a neighbourhood watch because of various and funny reasons. Things take a turn when they accidentally run over an alien orb and they find out an alien has come to their small town and has started killing people. They realise that the alien is disguising itself as the people around them and, of course, this causes a lot of hilarious problems. Even though this is the main, overhanging storyline there are a lot of smaller ones, including a fascination with joining the police force, daughter issues and infidelity.

Over the movie you really get to know the characters’ ins and outs and begin to care for them and their issues. There is a lot of hilarious moments in this movie but the real world problems the characters face really add a different element that other comedies don’t have. Of course these actors do have quite stock characters they play but they mould so well together in this movie, it’s definitely one everyone should watch. I found that a lot of the humour is quite laddish. A lot of jokes about sex and male body parts (sorry mum) are a big part of the story but that doesn’t mean it goes too far that makes it cringey and unwatchable.

If you enjoy movies with a lot of fun humour, a good soundtrack, and a sprinkle of sci-fi and aliens this is a movie you should watch. Sadly, when it came out, it was pushed aside by critics and barely got any coverage for the audience to find out about it. So here’s your sign to watch this movie, I enjoyed it and I usually hate science fiction so why shouldn’t you try it out too?

Have you seen The Watch? What do you think of it?

Until next time.

  1. Its not a movie I will be racing to watch again but I have seen it and I quite enjoyed it when I did watch it! Although it wasn’t particularly my cup of tea, I was also really surprised as to why it didn’t get much recognition. Great review x
