Psycho Review

Would you believe me if I told you my first viewing of Psycho was to write this review? I know, I know, I’m a terrible person and I’ve wasted my life by not watching this movie yet. But, I’ve finally watched it and, it is amazing! No wonder Hitchcock is so celebrated, he really is the master of suspense.

Psycho follows Marion who steals $40,000 from her boss and runs away to her boyfriend Sam. Along the way she pulls over into Bates Motel for the night where she meets Norman Bates, a simple man who still lives with his mother. In the night she is murdered by a ‘woman’ we presume to be Norman’s mother. When Marion’s sister Lila becomes worried over her sister’s absence she heads to Bate’s Motel to track her down. Here she discovers that Norman’s mother has been dead for ten years, killed by Norman himself, and he has been switching between his own personality and his mother’s to keep her somewhat alive within himself. In the end his mother takes over his mind completely and one of the most sinister monologues follows. This movie has some amazing writing.

The story is quite simple. For a two hour movie it doesn’t have a lot of plot and things get dragged out but that’s the point. Things are dragged out to keep us, the audience, on the edge of our seats and compelled to watch on. When you first meet Norman he seems almost sweet. He is a simple young man with clear issues in his isolated state. His taxidermy hobby is very interesting especially as he uses it to keep his mother preserved even though she is long dead.

Even though this movie was filmed in 1960 it still holds up even to this day. It’s a good storyline that is still relevant to now and nothing, bar the obvious old cars and telephones, really dates this movie too bad. I used to hate black and white movies but this movie doesn’t feel old at all, it is almost timeless. The jump scares that are clearly mirrored in more recent movies also made me jump! I didn’t think an old movie would get my heart beating as fast as it did!

I definitely recommend this movie. If you haven’t seen it please watch it and then get everyone else you know to watch it because I now understand why it is such a classic.

What do you think of Psycho?

Until next time.
