Sainsbury’s Christmas Advert Review

Sainsbury’s, I’m going to be honest, I don’t get it.

So, the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert has been a big topic of discussion online, mainly whether people love it or hate it.

I’m a bit confused by it.

Basically, if you don’t know, it’s about a man who has a mundane job in a toy factory. He’s trying to work out what to get his family for Christmas when he realises that the best gift he could give them is himself. He creates a bunch of weird toys to do his other errands including a nodding dog for his boss and a monkey with his face that goes through his emails. All the while he is busy spending time with his family and making the most of Christmas. All this is set to a musical song sung by James Corden and all in all goes on for about three and a half minutes.

This advert is cute, it’s all about spending time with the ones you love at Christmas and making the most of your time together. The little jokes within it are very clever. Including the snowflake disrupting trains and the nodding dog with the boss but otherwise it’s a little bit strange.

I don’t really see the point of it. Other adverts make you laugh or cry and remind you of Christmas and the things about it but this one is just so bonkers it doesn’t really fit. Yes there’s the obvious Christmas-ness of it all but it just doesn’t seem to work.

The one thing they did get spot on however was the diversity of the advert. From the mixed-race couple to the lesbian couple seen above it’s just a very good advert for that and doesn’t call attention to it either. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the overall advert these little bits did stick out for me and I did really enjoy them.

What do you think of the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert?

Until next time.
