So finally, the great night was upon us, things have been changed, faces have gone and new ones have appeared….but what did I really think of the new Channel 4 GBBO?

I actually really enjoyed it.

The first episode focused around cakes including fruit cakes, mini rolls and an illusion cake. The bakers all seemed lovely and everything felt fairly normal, until the presenters started talking. The difference with these presenters was they don’t have much chemistry and seem a bit misplaced. All their lines and quips are way too forced and scripted and it felt a bit awkward. I felt like the new judge was a bit up herself to be honest and I don’t think she could ever replace the queen herself and Paul. Well Paul was just handing out handshakes wasn’t he? Is he happier on a new channel around new people? Maybe there’s some gossip that needs to be had…

I also hated the adverts. It’s the old story of the advert cliffhangers and I’m not here for that. I don’t want to wait around to find out who’s star baker and who’s leaving, and I especially don’t want to add an extra 15 minutes onto my viewing time either! I’ve got stuff to get on with!

But one thing that I loved was the challenges. They seem much more 21st century than what the BBC was offering us. I mean illusion cakes? They are all the rage right now and seeing the bakers’ creations were amazing. It makes me excited to see what intricate designs the judges will want next and how much more technical they can go. I feel like the bar has been raised since moving to Channel 4 and I am really here for it and will be tuning in for the next few weeks to have a look.

I think this could be good. It’s fresh, it’s new and I am enjoying it. I hope it stays good.
