Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special Review
Yes I know we’re nearly 3 months into 2020 but better late than never right?
I have a semi-obsession with Gavin and Stacey. I didn’t watch it until I was about 23 but I loved every minute of it, so when I heard they were doing a Christmas special I was very excited.
The actual Christmas special was quite fun and enjoyable. It was interesting to see Gavin and Stacey with three kids especially as we never learnt about the child they were pregnant with at the end of the last season (an ending that always annoyed me – I wanted to know more!) and it made sense that Nessa still only had Neil the baby – and keeping that name was the best thing I could’ve hoped for.
Of course all the old characters are still as wonderful as they ever were and, I might be on the unpopular opinion of this but, I loved that they didn’t say what happened on the fishing trip. I feel it’s been so hyped over the years that any answer would’ve been an anti-climax so I’m glad they left that to the audience’s imagination.
I felt like they packed a lot of story into this episode and some of it I wasn’t interested in. Gavin and Stacey’s little tiff they have about how they’re not young anymore was a lovely moment and was relatable but also felt a bit unneeded. It was obvious they only added that in for the nostalgia of when they first met etc. Same with other bits like Smithy’s girlfriend. She apparently was meant to represent the audience who have never watched Gavin and Stacey but again it didn’t feel natural and was a bit strange.
We have to talk about that ending. It’s always been a thing of Nessa and Smithy’s will they, won’t they, and it did give me goosebumps watching. But do I think this warrants another season? Much like the fishing trip I like the idea of it being open ended. The whole point of Nessa and Smithy is that they’re always on and off and I quite like that we may never know. Sometimes getting answers to things can be a let down because you as an audience member have played it up so much in your head the actual show doesn’t deliver what you’d like. I think I can continue my life happily never knowing.
What did you think of the Christmas special?
