Doctor Who: Spyfall Review

The beginning of a new season! Was it any good? Well…

I wasn’t that impressed with this two-parter. I felt it was catering more to the younger audience and leaving the adults behind. It had fun moments with the gadgets but it did feel very Looney Tunes to me. There wasn’t a lot of substance in my eyes and the story line felt quite simple. Phones are something everyone uses so we will make it their downfall and save the day by going back in time showing different ways of communication to tie it all together. It also felt very ‘girl power’ which is a running theme I’ve found with the new Doctor.

Now let’s talk the Master because to be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan. I’ll be honest, when the Master revealed himself on the aeroplane with his flying house I didn’t understand. It wasn’t until someone called him the Master I realised who he was. And then things got way too on the nose with putting him in a Nazi uniform! We already know he’s bad so do you have to be so obvious about it?

The only thing I enjoyed about this was very short lived and that was how creepy the creatures were when they were first introduced. Having them practically melt out of walls and just appear was terrifying and how they still had whatever they were camouflaged with still on their body was really creepy, but once they became just creatures of complete light they lost all horror for me.

I don’t think this was a terrible couple of episodes but I definitely think it could’ve been better. Keep the monsters as hidden camouflaged beings we could see lurking in the background. Make the Master more intense and less likeable and don’t just become a James Bond rip-off with the gadgets.

What did you think?

Until next time.
