The Good Place Season 1 Review

This is one of those shows where each episode is so short you can just continue to watch it and watch it until you finish the season in a day.

The Good Place greets us with the character of Eleanor, a woman who didn’t have the best morals on Earth but ended up in the good place, which is basically heaven, where a very small select few people get to go and have a wonderful life while everyone else end up in the bad place where they are continuously tortured.

Due to Eleanor‘s life however and the fact that it seems she has been mistaken for someone else who was good in their life, she realises she does not belong in the good place but has to work out how she can stay, whether she really deserves to stay, and has to deal with all the people around her too who are goody two shoes that she does not get along with. However there is a twist and I am intrigued to see how they continue it into season two…

I really enjoyed this show. It’s quite millennial and makes a lot of silly jokes that are very of its time. It knows what it is, it’s very fun and different and has a storyline that keeps you watching, but also is easy enough to watch and shut off and not think about again. I do enjoy it and it does give me an interesting look at the afterlife in a way that hasn’t really been done before.

Spoilers ahead! We find out at the end of the season that she is in fact in the bad place with three other people that she’s come to know, and everyone else in the neighbourhood is in fact the architects that have made this world. So it’s very interesting that in the first season we go through the whole story arc of it being a good place to then change to the bad place and we find out at the end that in season two her mind is going to be erased along with the others and it’s all just going to start again, almost as if it’s a constant experiment. This makes me wonder where season two is going to go and how it’s not going to be too repetitive or boring, especially as so much has happened with these characters to then see them revert back is going to be strange.

Spoilers over. This is definitely a show I would recommend especially if you want something a bit more light-hearted that you can enjoy, but you don’t have to spend too much time thinking about. Of course it has twists and turns that you want to discover and explore in more depth but you don’t really have to if you don’t want to, and if you just want a light-hearted comedy that you can sit back and relax and enjoy with then this is definitely that.

It also makes you wonder what you have done with your time on Earth and what that would mean for you in the afterlife. Have you really done enough good things to be sent to the good place? Or while you’re still on Earth could you make changes in your life to be even better? Or do you not mind going to the bad place?

Until next time.
