Sonic the Hedgehog Review

There was one person that made this film incredibly enjoyable and that was Jim Carrey.

Sonic the Hedgehog unsurprisingly follows the video game character of Sonic as he is pushed out of his world for being different and thrust into the world of America and dealing with being an outcast there. He sees families enjoying each other’s company, he is able to watch TV shows through their windows, but at the end of day he knows he is all alone. And things only get worse when he starts being hunted down by Doctor Robotnik who honestly was the best character in this film.

I know I have spoken about Jim Carrey already in this review but he is so good in this! I feel sometimes Jim Carrey can be quite one note, but I feel the characterisation that Jim brings to this role is really suited. This one I feel is definitely more of a family friendly film than a kid friendly film as it did have a lot of moments that adults can enjoy, as I did, and I really feel especially if you know Jim Carrey from his other works growing up then you can really enjoy this film with your own children.

And while I went into this film expecting to have some criticism with it based on what I had seen online about the art style having to be changed and people not being happy with it for it being a video game film, I think it was really enjoyable because it didn’t pull too much from the video game. I feel a lot of video game films have issues because you are not the one playing it, you are not the one in control, and so you see the characters doing things that you don’t think really fit the narrative of the video game, however because this one was set on our planet and not in Sonic’s world you have the disconnect between the video game and the film.

I grew up in the era of Sega video games and I used to love Sonic the Hedgehog and so watching this brought back a lot of happy memories for me from my childhood, but that doesn’t mean that I was watching it through rose tinted glasses. I really enjoyed this film, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for me I thoroughly enjoyed it and I really enjoyed Jim Carrey‘s character in it too. I feel I have fallen off somewhat from Jim Carrey and his work and this definitely inspired me to go back and watch old favourites again because he is just a fantastic actor.

What do you think of Sonic the Hedgehog?

Until next time.
