Shrek Forever After Review

This was definitely the weakest of the Shrek movies, and this is in fact the first time I’ve been able to watch it fully, as every time before this I would fall asleep.

So Shrek Forever After follow Shrek, once again, who, once again, isn’t happy with his life and decides to go and make a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to have his old life back before he met Fiona and before he met donkey and puss. However things aren’t as they seem and he soon realises that he should’ve appreciated what he had all along because he was happy.

The biggest issue I have with this movie is that it wasn’t very funny. If we look back at Shrek there are so many quotable lines in it that are iconic because they’re hilarious. In Shrek 2 you’ve got the parodies of other films and media that really make it a good film for the whole family, however this film was so serious. It was so about this storyline of Shrek being unhappy and thinking his happiness can be found elsewhere and so the actual funny moments we have are far and few between, and a lot of them were quite dumbed down, when a lot of the comedy we had before was great for a variety of ages.

I also didn’t care much for the storyline. It seemed to just keep dragging on. Puss being fat was fine but wasn’t the hilarious moment that I think they hoped for, donkey was of course brilliant but he is the token comedic character. Fiona’s character was interesting but again she was very serious and very proper and so that kind of worked against the other Shrek movies, and Shrek himself just seemed a bit of a down in the dumps guy who was trying really hard to bring his family back.

Continuity errors that I noticed as well watching the Shrek movies in such quick succession was we get to see Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek the Third, however his character is completely different to the Rumpelstiltskin we meet in Shrek Forever After…

That doesn’t mean this was a bad movie! It was a good movie because it was very heartfelt and it really wrapped up the whole story of how Shrek is finally happy in the situation, because he’s realised everything that he’s got is everything he could want. But that doesn’t mean that the movie holds a candle to any of the others. It really fell short because it was too serious and too bland and I really needed those comedic elements to be more, because that’s what Shrek is, it has the interesting tale and the heartwarming moments but also so much comedy, and this one just didn’t have that.

Would I go back and watch this movie again? Only if I was doing a binge watch of all of them because it really does fall short. I feel the other movies are great, Shrek the Third definitely has some issues too, but as a trilogy they’re great and then adding this movie on top was just a bit underwhelming for me.

What do you think of Shrek Forever After?

Until next time.
