A lot of the Easter eggs in this advert could easily go over my head as I’m not a big sports person, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the advert.

Sports Direct made an advert that clearly appeals to the masses but has enough subtle moments in it that only true fans of sport will understand. It follows the story of people sitting around not doing much and then saying that it’s snowing outside and donning their workout gear from Sports Direct to go and have a snowball fight, and we see lots of different sports included in this including tennis, running, football (of course) and golf.

It was quite a simple advert but understood what it was doing. The sort of clothing and items you can buy from Sports Direct are made to be used outside when you’re being active so showing a snowball fight as an activity really added into the selling point of the clothes and didn’t make it too preachy about staying fit at Christmas or enjoying Christmas and then getting back on it in January with their items. It’s all about making the most of the moment but also buying from them.

I think it was subtle enough on its marketing to not make it all about selling you stuff but it did have plenty of brands shown that showed you what sort of things they do sell. It was enjoyable, it was quick, and while it may not be the best Christmas ad I’ve seen I definitely feel that it took its own path with what it was doing and it did it really well.
